Tò Vegna is one of the most authentic examples of traditional games in Valbelluna, still played today in Farra di Mel, in the municipality of Borgo Valbelluna. It is an ancient street ball game, handed down from generation to generation and deeply linked to the identity of the village.
Its origins date back to at least the 17th century, when similar games were widespread in many European towns and were played along narrow alleys and streets, which became veritable playing fields. The name comes from the ritual exchange of words that precedes each play: the person throwing the ball shouts “Tò!” (“catch”), while the person receiving it replies “Vegna!” (“come”), officially starting the action.
Tò Vegna is played with a small rubber ball and two teams of one to five players. The field is not marked by lines, but by the spaces of the village itself: walls, houses and streets become an integral part of the game, making each match unique. The rules, adapted over time to urban changes, still allow this tradition to be kept alive today.
In the past, Tò Vegna was played with great passion and popular involvement, so much so that it fuelled rivalries between districts and, in some cases, generated lively disputes. Today, however, it represents a moment of gathering, collective memory and celebration.
Tò Vegna takes centre stage during the Sagra de le Palote e dei Amoi festival, which takes place every year in Farra di Mel, usually on the second Sunday in July. On this occasion, official tournaments are organised, attracting residents and visitors alike, as part of the Palio delle Contrade, one of the most heartfelt events in the local community.
Recognised as an expression of intangible cultural heritage, Tò Vegna has also been promoted in important events dedicated to traditional games, such as Tocatì – International Street Games Festival. Watching a match means immersing yourself in a living tradition that tells the story, spirit and sense of belonging of Farra di Mel.
The practice of To’ Vegna is recognised as UNESCO intangible heritage.
