Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta (arcipretale di Lentiai)

A national monument with a magnificent coffered ceiling

The archpriest church of Lentiai, which stands majestically opposite the town hall of the former municipality of the same name, conceals a magnificent coffered ceiling inside, the work of Giovanni da Mel, Palma il Giovane and Luigi Cima. The territory of Lentiai has belonged to the diocese of Ceneda (now Vittorio Veneto) since the Middle Ages.

The oldest document concerning this parish (the parish of Santa Maria di Lentiago) is a parchment codex from 1204, which also allows us to know the extent of the parish territory, which stretched from the small church of San Donato, near the Castle of Zumelle, to Marziai. (In 1633, Villa di Villa, Tiago and San Donato di Zumelle separated).

During the 1500s, the bell tower was completed, the church, which was “in maximo periculo” (in grave danger), was restored, and the building was subsequently enlarged to the south and extended to the west. Finally, towards the end of the 1500s, the side altars were completed and the choir was added.

In January 1718, a fire devastated the belfry and the dome, melting the bells and the lead roofing. Despite the huge expense of renovating the bell tower, work and acquisitions continued throughout the century.

In 1900, numerous changes were made: the side altars were removed, the choir loft was taken down and the organ was moved behind the high altar. The 17th-century stone floor was replaced and the frescoes in the central nave were restored.

There are numerous works of art in this church: enter through the bronze entrance portal, placed in memory of the young people of Lentiai who died tragically, and look up at the magnificent coffered ceiling, which is truly fascinating. Between 1577 and 1579, Cesare Vecellio recounts the story of the Madonna in 20 episodes, from the expulsion of Joachim from the temple to the coronation in heaven.

Among the altarpieces and canvases that follow one another on the side altars, we find works by Giovanni da Mel, Palma il Giovane, Francesco Frigimelica (attribution), Cesare Vecellio and a painting by Luigi Cima, originally located at the Hermitage of Saint Donatus.

The high altar is also spectacular, a ten-panel polyptych from the school of Tiziano Vecellio, depicting the Assumption of the Virgin dominated by the Deposition of Christ, and saints and martyrs dear to ecclesiastical tradition.
The archpriest’s church of Lentiai has been a national monument since 1880.
